Port forwarding with DSL

Port forwarding with DSL

If you have a DSL box as well as a router, go ahead and setup the port forwarding on the router then come back to this page. The instructions below are for a VisionNet DSL box if you have a different make and need some help try looking up your DSL box model on Port Forward .com.

VisionNet DSL boxes
VisionNet DSL boxes have a nice web based interface, the default username is admin and the default password is visionnet.

To login to the router, open a web browser (e.g. Internet Explorer or Netscape or Safari) and go to the router by its address, this is likely to be http://10.0.0.2, this should then ask you for a username and password on entering those (admin and visionnet are the defaults), you should then see a DQ Technology page.

Look down the left hand side for an Advanced configuration link, cick on it then again down the bottom left for a Virtual Server link that you also need to click on.

A new screen then opens up on the right, scroll down if you need to but you need to lolcate (near the bottom) the Add User Defined Ports section which has a few sections that look a little like those you already defined for your router. Don't think because it looks similar that you don't have to do it, with a DSL box and a router, the DSL box is your first firewall and the router is your second, you have to configure them both or the traffic wont make it through.

You see fields like the following and again we will use MyRingToneServer's default port as if you had not modified on the MyRingToneServer settings screen:

an ID field leave this set to whatever it is currently set to

a Public Port field set this to 21080

a Private Port field set this to 21080

2 Port Type buttons - select TCP

a Host IP address - this needs to be set to the WAN IP address of your router, see our page for looking up the WAN IP address of your router.

an enabled button which you should check

Then click the Add button

One last step to make for some people, some VisionNet DSL boxes come from your telephone company with an extra layer of IP filtering configured, adding to this is vital to your success. To see if you also need to make this addition, on the left hand side scroll down to the security section and click on IP Filter. The window on the right now shows a table of entries (known as rules). If there are no rules already listed you can skip this section. Otherwise, scroll down to the bottom of the page (using the scroll bar on the right hand side of the screen) and click the Add button. A new window pops up which can look a little daunting but it's not so bad. Make the following settings:
Rule ID: 1 (that's a one)
Action: Accept
Direction: Incoming
Interface: Public
In Interface: All
Log Option: Disable
Security Level: Low
Blacklist Status: Disable
Log Tag: (don't change)
Start Time: (don't change)
End Time: (don't change)
Src IP Address: (don't change)
Dest IP Address: (don't change)
Protocol: eq and TCP
Apply Inspection: (don't change)
Source Port: (don't change)
Dest Port: eq and 21080
TCP Flag: All
Leave all other field as they are and click the Save button.
Then click the Save button on the window with all the rules on it.

Then on the left hand side (using the left hand scroll bar) all the way down the bottom is a Save and reboot link, when you click this you get to wait patiently while the DSL box reboots.
